About ParentWorth

Who writes ParentWorth, and how every comparison is built.

Hi, I’m Sokhom Hoem

I’m a finance professional and a parent of two daughters. I started ParentWorth because the money decisions that come with children (childcare, baby gear, school, whether one parent should step back from work) are some of the biggest a household makes, and most of the advice about them is either vague or quietly trying to sell you something.

My day job is numbers. I’ve spent more than 15 years in banking: budgeting and forecasting, financial modelling, regulatory and management reporting, and building business cases for new products. ParentWorth applies the same habits to family decisions. State the assumptions, compare the options on the same basis, and give a clear answer.

Background

  • CFA Program Level I
  • ACCA Membership since 2022
  • Master’s degree in International Business, Melbourne Business School (2017 to 2018)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Banking
  • Banking since 2009

What ParentWorth does

Every article answers one question: is it worth it? A $200 stroller or a $1,000 one. Daycare or a nanny. Private school or public. Each comparison follows the same method:

  1. Start from a real decision parents face, and name the options.
  2. Write down the assumptions behind every number, so you can swap in your own.
  3. Compare cost, value and the practical trade-offs, including time and lost income where they matter.
  4. Give a straight verdict: worth it, not worth it, or exactly what it depends on.
  5. Finish with simple decision rules you can apply to your own family.

What ParentWorth is not

ParentWorth is general information, not personal financial, tax, legal or medical advice. Health questions, like how to feed your baby, belong with your doctor; ParentWorth only looks at the money. Verdicts are never for sale. The site earns money from ads and affiliate links, which is explained on the affiliate disclosure page.

ParentWorth is a personal project. The views here are my own and not those of my employer.
