Every October the same small shock arrives: last year’s coat no longer closes over the sweater. A good kids’ coat can cost $120 or more, and the child who needs it will outgrow it, often within a winter or two. Spending that on a garment with a short working life feels wrong, and buying a cheap one every year feels wasteful in a different way.
The way to settle it is cost per child per winter. We priced real L.L.Bean kids’ coats on the brand’s own site, set them against a $40 scenario coat, and worked out how many winters of wear the expensive one needs. The answer turns on one thing the price tag can’t tell you: how many children will wear it.
What a good kids’ coat costs
On October 29, 2026, L.L.Bean listed its Kids’ Bean’s Down Jacket at $120.00. It uses DownTek insulation with a fleece lining and carries the brand’s “warmer” comfort level. The Kids’ Popham Puffer Jacket was listed at $130.00, marked down to $96.99, and the Toddlers’ Bean’s Down Jacket at $110. A lighter Kids’ Fleece-Lined Insulated Jacket was $99.95, but L.L.Bean describes it as a three-season layer, so it is a different purchase from a winter coat.
L.L.Bean also backs its products with a guarantee worth knowing before you pay: you may return an item within one year of purchase for a refund if you are not 100% satisfied, and after one year the company considers returns of items that are defective due to materials or craftsmanship. Like most guarantees, it covers defects, not a child who outgrew the coat.
| L.L.Bean kids’ coat | Listed price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Kids’ Fleece-Lined Insulated Jacket | $99.95 | Three-season layer, “warm” comfort level |
| Toddlers’ Bean’s Down Jacket | $110.00 | Down jacket for toddlers |
| Kids’ Bean’s Down Jacket | $120.00 | DownTek insulation, fleece lining, “warmer” comfort level |
| Kids’ Popham Puffer Jacket | $130.00 (now $96.99) | Down puffer, weather-resistant |
The cost per winter
Assumptions
- The expensive coat is the $120.00 Kids’ Bean’s Down Jacket. The cheap coat is a $40 scenario price, not a sourced price.
- A “kid-winter” is one child wearing the coat for one winter. A coat handed from one child to a sibling counts as two or more.
- The cheap coat is bought new each winter, or lasts two winters. How long a coat lasts is our assumption, not data.
- Resale, sales and coupons are left out. Selling a premium coat second-hand would favor the expensive one.
| Kid-winters of use | Cost per kid-winter for the $120 coat |
|---|---|
| 1 | $120.00 |
| 2 | $60.00 |
| 3 | $40.00 |
| 4 | $30.00 |
3 kid-winters
How long a $120 coat must be worn to match a $40 coat bought new every winter.
Source: ParentWorth calculation: $120 / $40 = 3.

The break-even: how many kid-winters
The expensive coat wins when its kid-winters beat its price divided by the cheap coat’s cost per winter. Sale prices lower the bar:
| Premium coat price | Beats a $40 coat bought yearly after | Beats a $40 coat that lasts two winters after |
|---|---|---|
| $120.00 (list) | 3 kid-winters | 6 kid-winters |
| $96.99 (Popham, on sale) | 2.4 kid-winters | 4.85 kid-winters |
| $84.99 (one Bean’s Down color on sale) | 2.1 kid-winters | 4.25 kid-winters |
So a single child who outgrows the coat after one winter is better off with the cheap one. Two children close enough in age to share it get to two or three kid-winters. A family of three, or one that buys a size up so it fits for two winters and then passes it on, reaches the break-even. We made the same use-count argument in our backpack and kids’ bike articles.
Which family are you?
One child, no hand-down
The coat fits for one winter, maybe two with a size up.
The cheap coat wins. $40 a winter beats $60 to $120.
Two or three kids sharing
The coat passes down at least once or twice.
The $120 coat is $40 or less per kid-winter. Buy it, ideally on sale.
Mild winters or school-only wear
The coat is used for a few cold weeks, not months.
Buy the cheap coat, or use the three-season layer plus a sweater.
Warmth and fit are your call and your pediatrician’s, not ours. Check the manufacturer’s temperature guidance for where you live, and size so the coat is not so big that it gets in the way. What we compare here is money.

Good for: the one-child or mild-winter family that wants a plain, insulated coat without the premium price. The listing describes a water-resistant taffeta shell that is fully lined, quilted and insulated, with an oversized fit, and care is machine wash cold, tumble dry low. We have not tested it, so check the size chart and reviews against your child.
Is it worth it?
Verdict: it depends
A $120 kids’ coat is worth it only if it will be worn by about three kid-winters or more: two or three siblings sharing it, or a size-up coat worn two winters and handed down. If it will be worn by one child for one or two winters, a $40 coat costs less. On sale at about $97, the break-even drops to roughly 2.4 kid-winters.
Decision rules
- If only one child will wear it, buy the cheap coat. $40 a winter beats $120 over one or two winters.
- If a sibling will inherit it, count both children’s winters. $120 over four kid-winters is $30 each.
- If the premium coat is on sale, recompute. $96.99 breaks even at about 2.4 kid-winters.
- If your winters are mild, do not pay for warmth you will not use. L.L.Bean lists a three-season layer at $99.95.
- If a coat fails from a defect, use the guarantee. L.L.Bean takes returns within one year, and defective items after that.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a good kids’ winter coat cost?
On L.L.Bean’s site on October 29, 2026, the kids’ and toddlers’ insulated jackets we checked ran from $99.95 to $130.00, with some on sale: $120.00 for the Kids’ Bean’s Down Jacket and $96.99 for the Popham Puffer.
Does L.L.Bean’s guarantee cover outgrown coats?
No. L.L.Bean says you may return an item within one year of purchase if you are not 100% satisfied, and after one year it considers items defective due to materials or craftsmanship. A child outgrowing a coat is neither.
How many winters does a kids’ coat last?
We did not find a reliable source, so we do not give a number. Use the break-even table with your own experience of how fast your child grows.
Is it cheaper to buy a coat a size up?
A larger size can stretch one coat over two winters, which halves the cost per winter. Whether it fits safely and warmly is your call; we only compare prices.
